If I got a dollar for every time someone asked me about my hair, I would be able to quit my job and live on a private island somewhere off the coast of Europe. Okay, maybe I wouldn’t be able to live THAT large, but I’d make some extra money for sure!
Having a good hair day isn’t nearly as hard as you think and today I’m going to share with you 5 tips to help you achieve your #hairgoal moment every single day.
Tip #1: Wash your hair once a week. Yes, you read that correctly. I only wash my hair once a week. Your hair has tons of natural and healthy oils that you are stripping away when you over wash it. It can be a hard concept to grasp at first, but if you give your hair time, it will train itself not to get too greasy. If you don’t think you can go a whole week to start…try doing every 3 days and work your way up. I promise, it will change the health of your hair. When you do wash it, use a really good high quality shampoo and wash it twice. I’m currently obsessed with Pai Shau. It’s vegan, sulfate-free, affordable and smells amazing.
Also, make sure you use minimal product in your hair after you do wash it to keep it as fresh as possible. Usually around day 4, I use dry shampoo to help spruce things up a bit. My current obsession is Redken Pillow Proof Blowout Extender.
Just a friendly reminder…this doesn’t mean you should shower once a week. 😉
Tip #2: Invest in a good brush. People underestimate how important a good brush actually is. Last year, I finally took the plunge and purchased a Mason Pearson Popular Brush. The thought of spending $200 on a hair brush literally made me shutter, but I finally bit the bullet. After using it, I can honestly say that would buy this thing 10 times over if I needed to. It literally revitalizes my hair every single time I use it. I’m not exactly sure what kind of voodoo this thing has, but when I use it, my hair feels like silk (even after not washing it for a few days.)
I promise, it’s worth the investment.
Tip #3: Find a Hairstylist and a Salon that you LOVE: If you follow me on Snapchat (my username is ERICAECKMAN), you know I go to the salon every week to get my hair washed and blown dry. It’s one of my guilty pleasures and since it’s the only time I’m washing my hair every week, it ends up being totally worth it for me. I know not everyone is into doing that, but you should frequent a salon at least every 3 months for a trim. Getting a haircut is one of the most important parts in maintaining a healthy head of hair.
My hairstylist has now become one of my BFFs (I mean…I spend a lot of time with her) and I HIGHLY suggest you find someone you love and trust. If you live in Chicago and want to use my girl, her name is Jenna Bullaro (@beautybybullaro on Instagram) and you can find her at the incredible Dennis Bartolomei Salon in the Gold Coast. Tell them I sent you and maybe they will throw in a little something special for you!
Tip #4: Drink a ton of water: Ever since I started drinking a gallon of high-quality water a day, my hair completely changed. It’s now softer, grows faster and feels thicker. When you drink a lot of water, it flushes out the toxins faster and in turns helps your hair.
If you’ve seen me in real life at any point over the last 6 months, you know the ONLY water I drink is Essentia. I literally take a bottle of it everywhere with me. It has one of the highest PH balances on the market and is packed with electrolytes that really help me feel awesome.
Tip #5 Embrace your hair for what it is. For so long, I would try to turn my hair into something it wasn’t. I have naturally very wavy hair and I would spend HOURS straightening it only to have it bend back up on me 15 minutes later. Finally, when I just took my hair for what it actually was (and stopped fighting it), I was able to find a style that worked well for me. As a result, my hair was much healthier because I wasn’t using crazy hot tools for hours on end to make it look a certain way.
I hope these genuine tips and products help! Feel free to share your hair tips or ask other questions in the comments below!
