Last week, I had dinner at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse with the best friends you could imagine. Simply put, this evening was truly perfect.
I hadn’t gotten the chance to catch up with my friends in a while, so I decided to plan an intimate evening with them and attempt to dine al fresco (since we haven’t had much outdoor time this summer). I really wanted to get together for a nice meal and chat about life (and obviously food). After serching high and low for rooftops in the city, I came across Del Friscos and thought there was no better place to go than their adorable rooftop. The Del Frisco’s Balcony is impeccable not only because it’s outside and perfect to enjoy the fresh summer weather, but you’re perched above one of the best streets in Chicago.
After walking to our table, almost instantaneously, we were asked if we wanted the “VIP”. Being immediately curious what this meant, were directed to the gorgeous glass dispenser showcased on the bar. Inside this container were perfectly arranged pineapples gradually infusing Svedka Clementine Vodka. Secretly, we all thought they were calling the drink VIP because of us, but honestly you will feel like a VIP after just one sip!
After everyone arrived, Michael Taylor – Del Frisco’s Wine Director and Sommelier, sat us down for a quick wine tasting. To go with the whole “Al Fresco at Del Frisco’s” theme, he poured us a crisp Pinot Grigio, a full bodied Sauvignon Blanc, and the crowd favorite – a nice bubbly Rosé. All wines are supposed to pair well with all meals in the summer, and we definitely agreed. Not only is Del Frisco’s wine list extensive, but their wine cellar reaches all stories of the restaurant. Talk about amazement!
The first course couldn’t have been more suitable for us foodies. The Shellfish Plateau came out and I swear the “Chariots of Fire” theme song was playing. I’m not kidding, it came out in slow motion and it may have been glowing. As it was placed on the table, it was every foodie for themselves with everyone trying to get the perfect photo that would do justice to this glorious display. Chilled Alaskan King Crab Legs, Iced Jumbo Shrimp, Fresh Oysters on the Half Shell accompanied by traditional garnishes of lemon, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce and whole grain creamy mustard. We sure stayed Al Fresco with this heavenly appetizer.
Now, before I explain to you some of the crowd favorites, I have to paint a picture of what happened as we were ordering. First, there was a table-wide consensus to order every single side dish (#aggressive). We also decided (being food instagrammers) that we would like all of those sides placed on a seperate table so that we could get the perfect photo. I won’t lie, there were some eyebrows raised, but ultimately we got our way making us so grateful for the perfect lighting.
Now for me and my friends, getting the perfect shot of our food is probably as important as the taste of the food and Del Frisco’s did not disappoint. Each plate was simple and delicate, while still displaying the richness of each dishes flavor. We made way for the two specials, one bone in filet and a filet trio. The bone in filet was prepared “southern Oscar” style, which only meant one thing – a crab cake on top and Cajun lobster sauce all over. This decedent crab cake warmed my heart and the mix of the steak juices and lobster sauce created this beautiful marriage of flavor I still can’t get over. The second special came threefold. Each petite filet prepared with blue cheese and crusted in peppercorn, lump crab meat and a lobster au jus, and caramelized onions with granny smith apple butter, respectively. Jaw dropping.
My friend Tek ordered the Wagyu Longbone 32 oz. and it was twice the size of my face! This beautiful cut of meat was served bone-in to preserve all that flavor and juice for every last bite. As he passed out bites to everyone around the table, everyone was stealing each other’s forkfuls just to savor this insane dish even longer.
Kelly (www.eattravelrock.com) and Shai (www.drunkonshoes.com) ordered the Seared Chilean Sea Bass and for being a steakhouse, Del Frisco’s knocked this one out of the park. This delightful fish was nestled on top of crab fried rice and drizzled with a black bean garlic sauce.
Now for the fun part. The sides! These side dishes were unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. From chateau potatoes, to king crab gnocchi, to perfectly shaved brussels sprouts and onion rings the size of donuts, Del Frisco’s side game is on point! As I mentioned, we ordered one of every side on the menu and I highly suggest you do the same.
Let me guess, now your dying to go to Del Friscos and eat like we did? Well guess what, now you can!
I have teamed up with Del Friscos and they are letting YOU try one of their appetizers, sides or desserts for free with any main course. All you have to do is mention my blog when you dine at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse through the month of August.
You must, must, MUST get over to Del Frisco’s so you can get Al Fresco and understand my deep love for this restaurant. I know I’ll be back with my friends, Chicago visitors and hopefully this group of foodies again real soon.
Love always,
Erica
