Every single time I meet someone in Chicago, they always ask me what my favorite restaurant is. Given the nature of what I do, this isn’t a strange question, however for me, it’s a fully loaded one. With all the incredible restaurants and so many different genres of food in Chicago, how could I ever possibly narrow it down? My follow-up question is always, “Okay give me a type of cuisine.”
90% of the time, they say sushi.
Having recently come back from a trip to Tokyo, my sushi snobbery is kind of through the roof (so I promise you can rely on these suggestions). Some of these spots are main stream and some of them off a bit off the beaten path. Regardless, these are the top 5 sushi spots in Chicago (in my opinion) and you need to try each one!
1) Kai Zan: Have you ever literally wanted to propose to a restaurant? If you have been to Kai Zan, then I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about. Whether you’re looking for really high quality sashimi or some of the most crazy inventive bites of your life, you will find it at Kai Zan. I can’t say enough good things abut this place. When you go, I recommend going for the Omakase menu and trying a whole bunch of things. If you’re lucky (and really nice), the creative chefs are known to throw in a surprise or two throughout the meal.
2) Miku Sushi: This is in the former Tank Sushi location with the same menu, but a new owner. I’m not sure how they’ve done it, but they’ve managed to make this one of the best sushi spots in Chicago. This tiny restaurant in Lincoln Square packs some major flavor. Some of their signature rolls are so insane, I had to pinch myself a few times during the meal to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. The standout for me is their Robusata roll with lobster, fried banana and red tobiko wrapped in crispy rice and topped with honey mayo. I know…I know…
3) Sunda: Although more than just a sushi restaurant, this place has some seriously amazing sashimi and rolls. Of all the places on the list, this one is the most high-end and therefore you’ll get the pricetag along with it. If you’re looking to have a fun night out (there will most likely be a celebrity sighting or two) this is the place to go. The standouts here for me are the spicy tuna over crispy rice, the great white and crunchy pig hidden lobster.
4) Toro: This teeny tiny spot in lincoln park takes me back to Tokyo! This no frills, BYOB spot is perfect if you’re looking for unbelievably fresh fish at a great price point. They don’t take reservations, so prepare to wait or get there early.
5) Arami: To me, smaller portions usually equal disappointment. At Arami, it just means it will pack more flavor. This spot in the Ukranian Village is a must go for sushi enthusiasts in Chicago. I seriously don’t think there is a bad bite on this menu. My favorite part is their extensive vegetarian options (they do more than just cucumber rolls) so it’s even a great spot to bring those picky friends who say they don’t like sushi (I know we all know those people)!
So that’s my round up of the top 5 sushi spots in Chicago. Don’t see your fav on the list? That’s okay! I’m always looking to try new spots. Comment your favorite spots below.
Love always,
