If you’re a foodie, I’m sure you can totally relate to my indecisive daily food dilemmas. It’s like, do I want a yummy asian stir-fry or maybe some carnitas tacos with rice? Well, I have officially solved these foodie problems by discovering Si Fu, a Chinese Latin fusion restaurant located in Roscoe Village.
This place has everything from cream cheese filled wontons to spicy beef empanadas. Si Fu also have a huge selection of tacos, burritos, stir-frys, soups and salads all with your choice of one of their 7 delicious proteins. On top of choosing your protein, each of those menu items I just mentioned can be customized “Chino” style (Chinese) or “Latino” style (latin). For a list of their yummy proteins and styles, check out their insane menu.
Since their is a ton to choose from, here are the 5 things you need to try when you are there:
Cream Cheese Wontons: Oh my! These crunchy pillows of heaven are one of the most craveable things I’ve eaten all year. The wontons at Si Fu are salty, sweet, creamy and served with a unbelievably balanced sweet & sour sauce with a touch of heat. I think I finished the whole plate in under a minute (don’t judge me).
2) Tempura Mahi Mahi: The only way I can describe this perfectly flakey and crispy fish is…perfection. It is so moist and juicy that I found it to be some of the best fried fish I have ever had. While you can include this in any one of their dishes, I opted for a salad (sans dressing because it really doesn’t need it with all the flavor of the fish).
3) Chino Soup: Have I died and gone to heaven? With the weather cooling down in Chicago, this Chinese inspired soup is the perfect thing to warm you up. The depth of flavor you get with each sip is simply divine. It’s traditionally served with noodles, pickled daikon, carrots, cilantro & jalapeños. If you know me, you know I asked for it without cilantro! They were happy to customize and it was delicious. For protein, I chose Tofu which was seared perfectly.
4) Mongolian Beef: Literally, order this beef with any of their selections and you won’t be disappointed. It’s tender, succulent and flavorful. I’m glad I got it in the stir-fry so I could enjoy it’s beauty un-interrupted by other ingredients. Simply perfect.
5) Tacos (pictured at the top): If you want the best (and easiest) way to explore’s Si Fu’s exapnsive menu, make sure you order the tacos! For each taco you get to pick you protein and decide if you want it “Chino” or “Latino” style. On top of all of that, you even get to decide between 3 different types of tortillas. The possibilities are endless (but all delicious).
How amazing does all of this sound?
I have to be honest, normally I don’t look into restaurant ownership, but I had to figure out who the genius was behind such an inventive concept. Come to find out, it is none other than culinary superstar, Marc Wuenschel. This guy has a list of accolades that would make any die hard foodie swoon. Not only is he to former COO of Restaurants America, but he has held the top chef position with Hard Rock Café’s, Planet Hollywood and the House of Blues. He also has corporate experience with ESPN Zone and Fox Sports Grill. Is it creepy that I’m a little bit obsessed?!
Get down to Si Fu Chinese Latin Kitchen at 2116 Roscoe Street and enjoy this fusion experience for yourself!
Love always,
Erica
